Hornbills

Khao SokThirty of the world 54 species of hornbill occur in Asia with thirteen species found in Thailand.

Khao Sok has five confirmed species of hornbill including the rare helmeted hornbill ( Rhinoplax Vigil).

The hornbill is a true keystone species, as fruit eaters they are critical to seed dispersal, without them the forest would not be as luxuriant or diverse.

The presence of hornbills in large numbers is a good indicator of the health of the forest, and a healthy forest in turns allows hornbills to thrive.

As a survivor the hornbill is a class of its own.

Living relics from at least fifteen million years ago, the hornbill as a species is one of the oldest birds surviving on earth.
